General Scheduling Management

G1. I hope to modify a schedule after it was set up.

Answer: You can double click the schedule from the schedule list to edit everything of this schedule.

G2. Can I preview a schedule?

Answer: Right-click the schedule in the schedule list and select "Run Now" to preview what will happen when the time of the schedule dues.

G3. What will happen if my computer is not running when a schedule is due?

Answer: You can set how long your schedule can keep waiting by setting a waiting time in the last page of a schedule wizard or here is no special basic schedule type for it. But you can easily realize this kind of schedule like this:

a) Set the schedule started in a time between your typical sleep time and waking up time every day, such as 4:00 am

b) Set the waiting time (last page in a schedule wizard or property page) as to be waiting for 20 hours.

G4. Some other people sometimes use my computer, how can I protect my privacy?

Answer: Click "Options..." under "Tools" menu. This will start the "Options" dialog box. Check "Password Protected" and fill your password. Now after you have closed the main UI and let Scheduler run in the background, you can open the main UI again by double click the Scheduler icon in the system tray at right bottom of your screen. Now Scheduler will prompt you for the password. You can access the main UI only when you have the proper password.

G5. How to end the notice music or sound?

a) If you show a message and play a piece of notice music or sound at the same time. The music or sound will stop when you close the message box.

b) If there is no message box, if scheduler main UI is open, you can see a close sound button (the last button in the toolbar). You can click it to close sound.

c) Usually when notice music or sound is playing, you can see an animating icon playing in the system tray at bottom right of your screen. Right click the animating icon the start a menu, you can find the last menu item is "Stop Current Sound". Click it to stop the sound. You can stop the sound even if you have no password to enter Scheduler. It was designed like this so other people will not be disturbed if they have no password.

d) If you start a music file, you can close the player the same way as you do it as usual.

G6. Hibernation does not work on my computer...

Answer:

Hibernation is embedded in Windows 98/Me/2000... and all later Windows versions. However, it may not be enabled on a computer due to hardware configuration (such as when there is not enough disk space or the file system is not supported by hibernation, etc.), or not enabled just as the default OS setting. If hibernation is not enabled on your computer, a hibernation operation will just lead to a standby.

To check whether hibernation is enabled in the operating system and to enable it if not, please go through the following steps:

1) Open the Control Panel and open Power Options (or Power Management). There should be a tab called Hibernate. If you cannot find this tab, then hibernation is not supported by your computer for certain reason (maybe some requirements on hardware configurations are not met).
2) Switch to this Hibernate tab. There should be a check box called Enable hibernation or something like that. When you check it on, hibernation is enabled. When it is not checked, hibernation is disabled. Besides, there are the sizes of the current free disk space and the required disk space on this tab. If there is not enough disk space, the check box may be unchecked and disabled. After you have arranged enough disk space on your system drive, the check box will be enabled again for you to check it.

G7. How can I exit from Scheduler completely?

Answer:

Faint....if you hope to stop scheduling, you can do it by "Stop Scheduling" command from the "File" menu. The command will be changed to "Start Scheduling" after you stop it, so you can start it again when you want.

If you really want to exit from Scheduler completely, you can do it by menu command "File"-> "Exit Completely". Scheduler with be unable to help you after that.

Examples / Realizing Special Scheduling Requirements

S1. It seems there are so many things ahead. I don't know how to start.

Answer:

1) Make a new schedule for each of your plans. Scheduler will arrange them into corresponding categories according to time and schedule type automatically.

2) For those plans that will happen almost at the same time, you write them down in one schedule, so you have less schedules to manage, but none of your plans will be missed.

You may find scheduling your plans is not as complex as you may have thought after you really make it with the help of Scheduler.

S2. I hope to set a schedule for tomorrow, some day or everyday. I hope Scheduler will remind me the first time I open my computer in the morning.

Answer: There is no special basic schedule type for it. But you can easily realize this kind of schedule like this:

a) Set the schedule started in a time between your typical sleep time and waking up time every day, such as 4:00 am

b) Set the waiting time (last page in a schedule wizard or property page) as to be waiting for 20 hours.

S3. I will exit from the OS, and get a rest for a while. I hope Scheduler can run a schedule next time I am back.

Answer:

You can set a schedule that will start during the period you computer is shut down, and set a suitable "Waiting Time" as "Keep waiting". This schedule will start the next time you open your computer.

S4. I will get away for a while (but still keep the computer running). I hope Scheduler can remind me for something while I am back.

Answer:

You can set a schedule that will show a notice, write what you want to read as the notice text, and run it right now after you have created the schedule (right click it -> "Run Now"). It will still be there when you are back. :)

S5. I will pick some data for my experiment every 40 minutes.

Answer: Set the schedule type as "Repeating". Set the "Repeating Period" as 40 minutes.

S6. I am cocking some thing, and it will be ready 15 minutes later.

Answer: Set the schedule type as "Count Down". Set the starting time as 15 minutes.

S7. How to play a piece of music or other media in a type other than the basic music/sound type in the notice sound page (mid/rmi/wav/) of the schedule wizard or property pages?

Answer:

a) You can set the task type as "Run a Program/Open a File", and select the music / media file as the file to open. In this way, any media type you have player installed can be played - mpeg, mp3, wma, avi....

b) Make sure do not select notice sound for this schedule.

S8. How to realize the above requirement and show a text message at the same time?

Answer:

a) You can set another schedule that will start almost the same time (yes, the two schedule can be started at the same time) as the schedule above, which will show the message. Please select the task type as notice, and fill your message in the message box below.

b) Same as above, do not select notice sound for this schedule.

So the final result is your media plays and your message shows at the same time.

S9. How to use those special Windows operations (standby/hibernation/shutdown/reboot/logoff)?

Answer:

These task types can be used in such situations:

1) For most people, this most useful among these options is "Shut Down". sometimes you may be doing some time-consuming job, and leave your computer doing it along. You can assume a suitable time when you are sure your computer has finished it, can let Scheduler to shut down your computer to save power and protect your security.

2) If you have to shut down your computer and go out in the mid of a big and important job, you can save current system status into a disk file by the function of hibernation. The next time when you re-open the computer, the whole status when you hibernated will be resumed. If you haven't used hibernation before, please make sure hibernation is enabled on your operating system.

3) If you are doing some loop operations on Windows, you can set your computer to "Reboot" at a specified time, and set another schedule (set schedule type as Log On) to continue.

4) "Logoff" is also useful for security purpose - it will finish all the running programs, and if other people have no account in your computer, they cannot access it, but the public sharing resources can still be used by neighbor computers in your network.

S10. How to open/close the dial-up network connection?

Answer:

Search you Windows folder to find the location of the executable "rasdial.exe". If your Windows folder is "C:\WINDOWS", then the most possible location of this program is "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rasdial.exe". You can use this program to open (connect) or close (disconnect) your dial-up network connection.

1) Open (connect) dial-up network connection:

Task type: Run a program / open a file

Executable to run or file to open: C:\WINDOWS\system32\rasdial.exe

Parameter (can be a file path): "connection link name" name password

Note: the double quotation marks cannot be ignored.

2) Close (disconnect) dial-up network connection:

Task type: Run a program / open a file

Executable to run or file to open: C:\WINDOWS\system32\rasdial.exe

Parameter (can be a file path): /d
