Q1: Is there technical support for MLEditor users?

A: Sure, we provide web-based technical support for all registered users. Most problems you may meet, how ever, may be solved by reading help, which is rather detailed and clearly arranged. This FAQ also provides answers for some common questions. If you still have problem after that, just feel free to write us. We'll help you as soon as we can.

Q2: I found a bug...I think MLEditor is not good enough in...I am confused on...I think MLEditor can be improved this way...

Q3: What languages does MLEditor support?

2.1 UI Languages - MLEditor provides multiple UI languages. Currently, we have 3 embedded UI languages - English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Interested user can add new UI language by translating the file "template.ini" under "language" folder of MLEditor installation directory. We will add new UI languages step by step in the coming versions of MLEditor for languages with high user demands.

2.2 Text Reading and Editing Languages - MLEditor provides text reading and editing support for ALL languages Microsoft Windows support. This function requires your operating system to support double-bytes languages. The following operating systems can support double-bytes languages:

a) All language versions of Windows NT/2000/XP/2003.

b) All Windows versions (Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003) in double-byte languages (Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean).

The following operating systems do NOT support double-byte languages by default:

c) Windows 95/98/Me in a non-double-byte language, typical of this class is English Windows 98/Me. If there is a choice, English users of MLEditor are suggested to use MLEditor on Windows NT, 2000 or XP, where the text language switch function of MLEditor can work correctly.

For text of some language to show correctly, you should have fonts of this language installed in your operating system. But there is no need to worry about whether fonts of some language were installed, if fonts for some language were not available, MLEditor can automatically detect the problem and start a procedure to download and install the corresponding language pack to fix the problem for you. If your network connection is not available in most time, you can also download language packs from our download page at a suitable time, and install the language pack by yourself. All language packs required by MLEditor can be fount in this download page.

MLEditor support all languages that may appear on Microsoft Windows. Though some minor languages may not be listed in the source and destination language lists, but text of this language can still be shown correctly if you choose another language which is of the same language family (usually a major language used by a country neighbor to the country using this unlisted language).

Q4: What are the system requirements for MLEditor?

4.1 OS Requirements:

The proper functioning of text display in different languages by MLEditor requires you to run it on an operating system that supports double-byte languages. Please read Q3 above for details.

4.2 Hard Disk Requirements:

Size for the major program and documentations of MLEditor is about 4MB. If you install a language pack, additional disk space is required depending on the size of each language pack from within 400 KB, to near 6MB. The total size for all language packs is near 25 MB.

4.3 Limitation on Windows 95/98/Me:

Windows 95/98/Me are not high capacity operating systems. There are some limitations for current version of MLEditor to run on any of these operating systems:

1) You cannot open as many instances of MLEditors as you use it on NT/2000/XP/2003

2) There are limitations on size of the text you can edit or read in the source or destination edit area. If you try to open a large file, only the first 60K content of it can be read into MLEditor. And you can edit / paste even less text if you are using two edit areas together. We advice you to edit no more than totally 50 KB text in the two edit areas.

Q5: I cannot read text in some language on my computer. What happened? What can I do?

Please go through the following procedure to find what happened, and seek a solution:

5.1 Check what operating system you are using. If you are working on English Windows 95/98/Me, and hope to view text in some double-byte language such as Chinese/Japanese/Korean by MLEditor, then there is no solution now for your operating system. If you have choice, you can change to use MLEditor on English NT, or 2000, or XP.

5.2 If there is no compatibility problem as show above, please check if you have switched to the property language for proper editing area. If you cannot find the language which you are interested in from the two language lists, please try a language of your neighbor countries.

5.3 Font of respective language should be available in your system for text of this language to show properly. Now, font-related worries have been a history, because MLEditor can automatic detect if required font is not available, and the program will download and install language packs for the respected language for you. If your computer where MLEditor is installed cannot connect to network, you can also download language packs from our download page at a suitable time. All language packs required by MLEditor can be found here.

We believe most problems on reading text in a language different from your OS language can be located and solved by going through the above 3 steps. If you still have trouble after these 3 steps, please write us (service@speedy7.com) about it. Make sure to attach detailed information about the language and version of your operating system in your e-mail.

Q6: What does a language pack do on my computer? How do I know if I need install a language pack?

A: The proper display of text in some language requires you to have font of that language installed on your computer. A language pack will install font for corresponding language in your computer and configure it in a proper way.

Fortunately, there is no need for you to tell if you should install a language pack. If language pack for some language hasn't been installed, MLEditor will detect it and start a procedure upon your approval to help you download required language pack, and install it automatically on you computer. Note, the operating system must be restarted after you installed the language pack, so it can take effect correctly.

Q7: What's the difference between GBK and GB2312? Any influence for me when MLEditor supports GBK other than GB2312?

A: GB2312 is the core standard for the character set that we called Simplified Chinese used in mainland China, Singapore and some other areas. 6763 Chinese characters and 682 symbols are included in this standard. Almost all Simplified Chinese characters (99%+) we use every day can be found in the GB2312 table.

GBK is supported by All Simplified Chinese versions of Microsoft Windows since Windows 95. It's a more advanced code table (21003 Chinese characters + 892 symbols) which includes all characters and symbols in GB2312, as well some additional seldom-used characters and symbols. The additional parts are:

1. Corresponding characters in the Big5 table which cannot be found in the GB2312 table.

2. Some other ancient or seldom used characters.

Two major differences can be found with the appearance of GBK:

1. We can now find all corresponding characters of the Big5 table (13062 characters) in GBK, which is impossible for GB2312 as its size is only 6763.

2. GBK provides built-in traditional form of Chinese character together with simplified form of Chinese characters, so we can read both "simplified" and "traditional" Chinese characters (the inner code of these "traditional Chinese" character is different from that in the Big5 table) in Simplified Chinese web page and text editor.

Since GB2312 is a well-spread term, some related terms we know still remain the name of GB2312, though the inside code has already changed to GBK.

The change from GB2312 to GBK can be seemed as an update with nothing bad. As we mentioned above, since most characters we are using every day in Simplified Chinese have been included in GB2312, the difference is not very obvious for most users.

Q8. What's the difference between MLEditor and STGuru?

A: STGuru was created based MLEditor. In future editions, current features of editing and code conversion engine will not be reduced in both program, but the improvement of MLEditor will be focused on its major feature as a multi-language text editor. STGuru will focus on the services of code conversion between Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

If a user is mainly interested in the feature of code conversion between Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, STGuru is the best choice. But if you are more interested in the feature of text editing, MLEditor is better. Since the code conversion engine of MLEditor is already excellent, if you are interested in both text editing and general purpose GBK/Big5 conversion, and you are already satisfied with current GBK/Big5 engine of MLEditor, there is no need for you to turn to STGuru from MLEditor.

Q9. What's the importance for Unicode-related conversions?

A: Unicode-related conversions can be a big help if you are working on a NT/2000/XP/2003 system. When you copied text from a web page, or edit text in Notepad or some other Unicode program, the format for the data you are processing is Unicode data. Since the code format in MLEditor and many other programs is not Unicode, but ANSI text in some language or other non-Unicode format data, some times you may meet unrecognizable data after copy and paste data between these two kinds of programs.

The Unicode-related conversions provided in Clipboard Unicode Conversion Show as well as the 6 convenient ANSI <-> Unicode conversions can help you convert to and from Unicode data conveniently, which build a bridge between Unicode and non-Unicode programs.

Q10. How to input Chinese in a non-Chinese system?

A: sometimes we may meet some problem inputting Chinese characters when we are on a non-Chinese system. Please read the topic About Input Method in User's Guide for more details.

Q11. The text I pasted into MLEditor changed into to "????"

A: Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 use Unicode as its basic language code. When you are copying text from a web page and pasted it into MLEditor or other program, and when you are editing text in Windows Notepad, the text you are operating on is Unicode text. sometimes the system can automatically change the text into ANSI text properly if the language of your operating system is just same as the text. (So you may see right text after you have copied text from a Simplified Chinese web pages into MLEditor when the language version of your operating system is Simplified Chinese, or when you are copying Traditional Chinese under a Traditional Chinese operating system). However, if the language of text are you copied is not same as that of your operating system, the auto-map mechanism of the operating system may work on a wrong language, at this time, you may see these "????".

If you meet such problems, you can use Unicode -ANSI conversion commands to convert the Unicode data to ANSI in your interested language or from ANSI to Unicode when you need to do it. The 3 pairs of Unicode conversion button commands on the source/destination toolbar are recommended for such purpose.

Q12. Why I cannot translate from language A into language B?

A: MLEditor is a visual multi-language text editor. Any way, it's not a multi-language translator. Except for professional conversion between Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, this program cannot translate text from or to any other language. Until now we still haven't heard any translation program that can translate at a quality up to commercial standard. Usually professional quality translation can only be produced by experienced human translator, rather than a by program.

Though MLEditor is not a translation program, it designed specially for translators, and can be of help during your translation.
